Fine Wines and Memories
After my dear cousin’s funeral, a few years ago, her brother, James, met my family before he headed back to New York. We gathered at a small neighborhood Italian restaurant where they allowed us to “BYOB”. I brought a few great bottles of wines from home for the upcoming Italian meal: a cabernet sauvignon, a merlot, a pinot noir, and a zinfindel.
At the restaurant
Our immediate family is large so fortunately for us, the restaurant wasn’t very busy with other clients. The wait and kitchen staff took great care of us. The individual portions of the scrumptious entrees were large but, it encourage us to share our entrees with one another which ended up being a fantastic idea.
The earthy chicken alfredo pasta dishes paired well with the light, crispy, fruity pinot noir. Our family members with the mushroom dishes and salmon entrees enjoyed the merlot. Although my aunt decided to stick with the pinot noir for her salmon. To each, his own. As everyone has their own palate, there is no right or wrong answer.
The zinfandel was the popular choice with those that ordered the meatball and pork entrees especially the red sauces and pizza dishes. Some members also opted for the cabernet sauvignon for their second glass of wine.
Actually enjoying family time and our meal
My mother, who had recently returned from Spain, said we dined like the Spaniards did. Our meal lasted for a few hours and it was so nice that we didn’t rush through it. The attendees took our time with the meal and wine. We ate and shared the tiramisu with one another. The last of the Merlot and Cabernet went perfect with that classic Italian dessert. Although, we’d preferred to have gathered under different circumstances, it was a glorious time.
A couple of weeks after my cousin arrived in New York, he called to thank us for sending him off from Texas with a wonderful, excellent meal. He also wanted to know the name of the wines we were drinking. James said the wonderful meal and wine flow among the family made a sad situation manageable.
